STIRLING HEAD TO AMSTERDAM LOWLANDS TOURNAMENT
Many of our players traveled to Amsterdam this summer to compete in the Amsterdam Lowlands Tournament, alongside teams from throughout the world. While the tournament was lacrosse focused, there was a large social emphasis that everyone involved took advantage of.
While not everything was taking seriously, for example there were many lacrosse games played in fancy dress with each player having to perform challenges throughout the games. The level of lacrosse at the tournament was ranging from expert all the way down to social players. The tournament included both men's teams and women's teams from countries such as Belgium, England, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, USA and Wales. Friendships were formed from each team with the Stirling team being seen as the life and sole of the tournament having fun and playing some hard hitting lacrosse, always putting a smile on people's faces when we saw them out and about. The Lowlands tournament is an excellent tournament held each year and is well organised with the full line up of teams being invited to a boat party along the river and a night out in the local club. The sorts of things that make memories and create ever lasting friendships.
Games were played in a "round robin" format with fixtures picked randomly during the week before the tournament. Each team played five or six qualification games, with the overall winners advancing to the playoff games. The Stirling team were involved in the final game as extras for the USA Global Stars Celebrations with Jeff Ratioula, who has since been made an honorary Stirling Lacrosse players for his unbelievable energy and wit.
Having the week to spend in Amsterdam allowed our players time to relax, enjoy the local culture and experience a city that we had never been to before. The opportunity to spend a week with your fellow team mates is a great bonding experience and greatly brought the full team together. This in itself will improve our campaign in the BUCS and SLL leagues this coming year.

STIRLING PLAYERS REPRESENTING THEIR COUNTRY
Scott Lorimer – Sports Editor BRIG
Several students from the University of Stirling men's Lacrosse team have been selected to represent Scotland at the British National Championships, over the weekend of 30th April.
This is the second major achievement for the Stirling team who qualified for the European Club Championship back in September.
A total of nine players from the Stirling squad will be part of the 40-man Scotland full and U22 teams to take to the field against some of the best players in England. What makes the achievement even more special is the fact that the majority of the players have just taken up the sport in the last few years.
Stirling club President Gareth Thomas, one of the players selected, told Brig of his delight at having so many Stirling representatives at the tournament. "I'm massively proud of all the lads. From having completely new players, we took on six freshers at the start of the year, with none having prior experience. It's a great achievement for the guys who only started the sport a few years ago to now go on and represent their country." The full article can be found at www.brignewspaper.com

STIRLING LACROSSE HEAD TO FACE THE BEST OF EUROPE
Scott Lorimer – Sports Editor BRIG
The mens Lacrosse team traveled down to Manchester on September 17 2010 to take part in the European Club Championships. The four-day event saw Stirling compete with some of the best teams from all over Europe. The side won their Scottish Lacrosse League (SLL) and so qualified for the tournament.
Lacrosse club president Gareth Thomas explains what an achievement it is to be involved in the champion's league, “It was the first time Stirling ever won the league last year, so it’s quite a big thing. There are a lot of teams at the Championships who are professional teams and have paid players. We’re the only university team in Europe to have qualified.”
The Stirling team also represented Scotland at the event, as only one team from each country reach the final tournament.
Speaking about his squad Gareth explains how well they have progressed, “No players had previously played Lacrosse before coming to Stirling, we haven’t had one [experienced] player and from that we’ve had in total six national players for the Scotland side who are, at the moment, top ten in the world.”
Some of those players took part in the Lacrosse World Championships in July, making it into the last eight of the tournament.
“You’re like a big fish in a small pond playing lacrosse, because there’s only one national league per country, there’s always the chance to play internationally,” says Gareth.
However, the team have lost five of the national players, as they have graduated from university so the club will be looking for new players for the upcoming academic year.
Gareth highlights how accessible the team is and hopes freshers will be keen to come along and join in, “We’re not a team that’s very clique, we accept anyone into the team. It’s not a game in which you have to be fit either. We have freshers tournaments for up and coming players and we improve fast. Everyone ends up a good standard by their second year.”
